At the time that I am writing this, my internship is coming to an end. Saying that is actually making me very sad. My internship was such a great experience for me. I met so many new people and got to connect to people like I never have before anywhere else. It did not feel like a month at all, it still feels like I am barely starting. The staff at my internship site is very small, so I have been able to build my own relationship with each person there. It is now all over. During the duration of my internship, I feel and I have been told by my colleagues that I have made a huge impact at the San Diego Art Institute in many ways. The team at the institute is very small (it is a team of five people) so I have been a real help for them. They always like to remind me that if I wasn’t there, they would be doing all of these task all alone. Since internship is over, they are back to doing all the task on their own. Luckily during my time at internship, I was able to cut through a lot of task for them and make things a bit easier for the people working there. The staff looks sad watching the interns have to go. Once we are gone, they we be on low staff again. At my time at my internship, I was able to make a screening room, and develop a teen program for the institute which is something that would have taken a while for just one person there to be doing. All the work I did at the institute has been greatly appreciated. My internship has become more interesting. I have developed closer relationships with my mentor and those who I am working around. We have all become more comfortable sharing jokes with each other (even some inappropriate ones) and from it all, I am learning more about everyone around me. At my internship, I have been very busy doing a range of task from working the front desk, to delivering mail, and even participating in meetings. I have been all over the place there. A recent thing that happened that was fun was during our free tuesday. The institute was filled with people the whole entire day. Something funny but weird and nasty about that experience was that someone who completely stunk came in and stunk up the whole entire Institute. It really made a lot of people leave an took some time for the smell to clear up, but when it was cleared, crowds of people fled back in. Another fun but more serious time at my internship was our first meeting we had. I thought that the interns were just shadowing in on the meeting and seeing how they work at the institute, but we were asked to please share our ideas and to participate during the meeting. I spoke a lot during this meeting and had all my ideas heard and praised upon. One last thing that has happen is an event that we had after hours at the institute. It was my first time working an event. This event was a screening of a short film made by one of the artist. The event was a members only event, so I got to meet most of the members of SDAI. It went very smooth and just as we The people around me are all interesting. I don’t mean that in a bad way at all. They are all interesting because they are all really themselves and each of them has their own uniqueness that they carry. They are all very generous and kind. One of my colleagues even took me to randomly go get coffee on him. These people also all have a cool bond with each other. They all like to talk and laugh while working so they could make things more fun at work. Every morning we all play a game to get ready for the day. A couple colleagues of mine didn’t talk to the interns much at first but they have began opening up more and talking to us just how everyone else does. There are also lots of people who do not work at my internship site but are often their collaborating with us which I like because it reminds me of some of the projects we do at High Tech. These people are very friendly and motivated to get our collaborations working. As for the people I work with, they have many characteristics and qualities that I myself would like to develop. They are all very motivated. They each come in to work each morning full of energy and with a big smile on their faces. That is something that I sort of already carry, but sometimes I am just too tired to express it. Also, I want to be able to have the fun they have at work while also taking it seriously to finish what they are working on. Another thing is how they are never different to anyone. They always are the same person and it doesn’t matter who they are talking My workplace is very interesting. It is nothing how I imagined it to be. The staff is very small where I am interning so each person that works there is sort of manager of their own departments. There are only five staff members. There is Jake who is the gallery manager and who I work with the most, Karla the manager of education, Jacqueline M. who is the membership director, Jacqueline S. who is the executive director and then Sarah who is the deputy director. The place itself is also fairly small. Although the place is not what I thought it to be, it is a very fun work place. Every morning the teams play a little warm up game to get the day started which is something I really enjoy. Something that strikes me is how involved the interns are at the workplace. We are treated just as employees. During our first meeting, interns were invited to share in in about what they thought the team should do for an upcoming event. My ideas became highly praised during the meeting and were immediately put to work. I am so far really enjoying my internship. |
